Peter Island Resort
The Hotel
As the morning haze melts into the sea, the islands of Tortola, Cooper, Virgin Gorda, St John and Jost Van Dyke rise to form the back drop to your tropical paradise, Peter Island Resort. At night the lights from these neighbouring isles vie with the stars for your attention.
Peter Island is the largest private island in the British Virgin Islands, yet has just 32 Ocean View rooms, 20 Beach Front Junior Suites and 3 villas spread over 1,200 acres, so there’s plenty of space for everyone.
Beef Island is the International gateway to the BVI, but as bankers send their money here to sleep, you’ll appreciate just how sleepy this corner of the Caribbean can be. And in such a laid back atmosphere deciding which of the five powdery soft white sand beaches on Peter Island is the best constitutes serious discussion. Honeymoon Beach which was created for couples may rank highly, but you’ll be hard pushed to surpass the pleasure of escaping to the peace and beauty of White Beach especially enjoyed with a picnic lunch.
Days at Peter Island tend to start with a leisurely breakfast at Tradewinds, the hotel’s fine dining restaurant open for breakfast and dinner. Lunch though is definitely on the beach at Deadman’s for grills and handmade pizzas and light meals. It is also open in the evening for more casual dining.
For some the need to escape from this perfect Paradise Island for a little retail therapy is overwhelming and for them there is a regular complimentary ferry that shuttles between Peter Island and Road Town, just a short distance away. But be warned, this is the Virgin Islands and not Knightsbridge, so the emphasis is more on fun. For the active remaining on island choose from an array of complimentary activities including hobie cat sailing, Laser and Sunfish sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and snorkelling. There is also a scuba diving school, as well as the resorts 40 foot yacht Silmaril available for overnight sailaways or half or full day charters. Deep Sea fishing charters for big game fishing can be arranged. For those who prefer to be land based, there is a complimentary tennis, fitness centre, biking and hiking trails. Golf can also be arranged in St Croix, but you’ll need the helicopter to transfer you. The Spa at Peter Island is one of the very few in the Caribbean to offer a full Ayurvedic programme.
For couples thinking of getting married or honeymooning in the Virgin Islands, Peter Island offers the perfect setting. Weddings are such a personal and special event in a couples life, you cannot buy an ‘off the shelf package’. So whilst the basics may have a common thread, couples marrying at Peter Island discuss their plans with our Wedding co-ordinator, who fashions the couple’s dreams into their special day.
Browse our picture gallery to get a real feel of the understated luxury that is Peter Island. You can click on the image to expand it and as Telly Savalas said, ‘if a picture can paint a thousand words.....
Getting to the Virgin Islands and getting around when you’re there:
From the UK both British Airways (www.BA.com) and Virgin Atlantic (www.virgin-atlantic.com) fly nonstop to Antigua from Gatwick. Additionally BA fly to St Kitts and San Juan. Flights can be booked online or via a travel agent or tour operator. From these gateways flying inter-island to Tortola tends to be with LIAT (www.liatairline.com) which operates much like a bus service hopping from one island to the next. Alternatively private charters are available. For advice on the full range of flight options e-mail: Susan.Pollard@ClassicHideaways.com
The Virgin Islands are normally thought of as being made up of the British and US Virgin Islands. But look into some Danish guide books and you’ll find the Danish Virgin Islands as well and of course the Swedes came here as well. The main islands are Virgin Gorda, and Tortola in the British Virgin Islands and St Thomas, St Croix and St John in the US Virgin islands. The British islands are quite sleepy, but a visit to the ‘Baths’ is a must. For those looking to stray a little further St John is the most attractive. Without question the best way to see these islands is by boat. The local ferries can be fun, they’re certainly very fast. The best way of all though is to combine your stay with a couple of nights on Silmaril visiting deserted beaches and dining under the stars or in restaurants only accessible by boat. On arrival and departure let Peter Island organise your transfer from and to the airport aboard their own luxury ferry (approximately £30 return).

Breakfast at Tradewinds is the perfect start to the day, the large windows provide dramatic views over the Sir Francis Drake Channel and Tortola beyond, a perfect setting in which to enjoy a healthy breakfast. For a truly memorable evening every Thursday a Vintner evening is held in the wine room and the hotel’s Wine Merchant visits with a range of fine wines to complement the specially prepared dinner.
